Research Interests:

I am currently interested in uncovering the function of a new class of genes that code for novel microproteins termed SEPs (after small open reading frame-encoding peptides). I am focused on their identification by proteophylogenomics and mass spectrometry methods. Our results suggest that the human peptidome is far more complex than initially thought, and likely will constitute a new frontier for finding novel therapeutics relevant to many diseases. My focus is in looking for bioactive peptides relevant in the context of diabetes, obesity, rare diseases, mitochondrial function, and in human aging.
